9 UPCOMING FILMS TO WATCH OUT FOR THIS UPCOMING OSCAR SEASON
"Mank"
Director David Fincher ("Social Network, "The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button") adopts his father's (Jack Fincher) decades-old screenplay, casts the legendary Gary Oldman, and analyzes the tumultuous development of "Citizen Kane". It's sure to be nominated for best picture and a must-see before 2020 (finally) ends.
"Soul"
Pixar has lost their mojo, but "Soul" might just be that new and fresh animated feature film that reinvigorates its winning formula back to life. With Pete Docter back in the directing chair, there's no question you are looking at your winner for the best-animated feature of 2020.
"Minari"
Diversifying American cinema opens up the door for brand new possibilities, and "Minari" looks to blast those doors wide open. From the Walking Dead fame, Steven Yeun stars in a heartfelt drama that is sure to tug on your heartstrings and much more. While A24 doesn't get the Oscar buzz they deserve, "Minari" is surely something to watch out for.
"Hillbilly Elegy"
While not the most flattering story, director Ron Howard looks to adapt J.D. Vance's intense 2016 memoir. Going to be predictably criticized for being Oscar bait, but Amy Adams and Glenn Close are shoe-ins for nominations and you can count on there being a lot of buzz for best picture nominee before the Academy Awards.
"The Father"
More of a grand return for Anthony Hopkins, "The Father" doesn't reinvent the wheel but will take the necessary twists and turns that are more than likely to raise the antenna for Oscar voters. Certainly, a subject matter that won't attract a wide audience, but Hopkins and Olivia Colman will most certainly be splendid.
"Ammonite"
Battling depression and sexual identity, "Ammonite" is a given to be compared to "A Portrait Of a Lady On Fire" (the best film this year). But Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan look like an electric dynamic duo and the Academy will latch onto its complicated thematic elements, resulting in the best picture nomination.
"Pieces Of A Woman"
Its release date is still TBD, and it may get passed over for a nomination, but "Pieces Of A Woman" is bound to get people talking. Picked up by Netflix in mid-September, hopefully, a wider audience will be able to witness two supremely underrated actors in Shia LaBeouf and Vanessa Kirby.
"Sound Of Metal"
Far and away, my most anticipated film of the year, "Sound Of Metal" hopes to capture the human condition in ways that have never been seen on film before, and will finally give the spotlight to Riz Ahmed, one of the best and most under the radar actors working today.
