War for the Planet of the Apes Movie Review

There are numerous, compelling reasons why this is the greatest trilogy ever to come onto screen. This third film takes the series to new heights and even darker and more disturbing themes. It's sometimes a grueling experience to sit through, as sections of the film resemble the brutal scenes in "12 Years A Slave" or "Schindler's List". This is an instant classic, and a mixture of what an art house film attains, along with some of the best blockbuster action of the summer.

The premise starts off as Caesar goes through a scarring experience. Seeking retribution and mourning his loss, he takes his trusted apes on an adventure through a figurative hell. Director Matt Reeves puts on a show, taking us through dark and moody forests, and snow covered mountains. The amount of detail pulled off here is staggering to say the least.

To not give Andy Serkis credit for bringing Caesar alive, is an extreme disservice. It's an unbelievable achievement of acting, that the Academy should not ignore. He has brought to life one of the most brilliant transformations in a trilogy I've ever seen. Also to note is the chaotic and sometimes disheartening performance by Woody Harrelson who plays the colonel. It's an absolute horror show to watch Caesar confront an actual tangible evil. But it's Bad Ape played by Steve Zahn that creates a comedic relief needed for a film so set on showing a realistic apocalypse.

The CGI here is also second to none. The apes look more alive than ever, and the brutal beatings and persistent torture Caesar gives into, can be seen in his human eyes. Fatigue, anger, distress, love, it's all shown through brilliant CGI work, and it's a marvel to watch.

The final entry, puts on an action extravaganza. Each gun that's fired, or explosion set off has a reason to be happening. There isn't any unwarranted Hollywood bullshit going on in the film. From beginning to end "War for the Planet of the Apes" is a masterpiece of action.

The civil rights movement, the holocaust, biblical references, all philosophically analyzed throughout the film. Even touches on the film "Apocalypse Now" are shown, while maintaining a self awareness and brilliance by director Matt Reeves. It's enthralling to watch a director dare to even touch such heavy themes.

"War for the Planet of the Apes" is a spectacle not to be missed. Hair raising action, brilliant dialogue, and unbelievable CGI, makes it an easy recommendation. Audience members who have followed Caesar since the first film, will not be disappointed, and the final hoorah for the unbelievable performance by Andy Serkis deserves an encore. It's the best film this year, but also one of greatest films I've seen this decade.
