"Zack Snyder's Justice League": One Of The Most Dreadful Superhero Films In Recent Memory

"Zack Snyder's Justice League": Movie Review

Written By Alex Greenbaum

After witnessing the disaster that was "Justice League" in 2017, you'd think "Zack Snyder's Justice League" ( a 4 hour recut of the original) would unquestionably deliver on its hefty promises. However, director Zack Snyder's ("300", "Watchmen") overstuffed recut is one of the most visually overdone and unsatisfying films to come about in recent memory. Its pretentious filmmaking style, poor screenplay by Chris Terrio ("Argo"), and horrendous CGI make for one of the more insufferable superhero experiences in cinema history.

Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) team up to recruit a group of superheroes to take down the infamous Stepphenwolfe and Darkseid before they destroy planet earth.

Snyder's 240-minute torture fest is utterly shocking, to a point of delirium. Its dark and bland visual style only accentuates its flaws, further showcasing just how empty and braindead its screenplay by Terrio really is. "Zack Snyder's Justice League" becomes laughable as the integration of odd musical choices and over-the-top use of slow-motion only cheapen its big climactic moments. And that's not to say Snyder's filmmaking style doesn't mesh well with his prior works, but here it resembles a sort of hokiness that disrupts any of its more interesting character development.

On top of the disgraceful special effects, its storytelling falls to abysmal levels. The lack of attention to creating a cohesive plotline with such a long-running time is unbelievable and almost impossible to put into words. Furthermore, the absence of any intelligent material slowly becomes disorienting as its mindless action drones on.

From beginning in 2017 to now (finally) ending in 2021, the two iterations of the "Justice League" films have used over 370 million dollars in resources. A mind-boggling number that represents a superhero universe that since "Man Of Steel" in 2013 has spent (and wasted) upwards of over 2 billion dollars and hasn't come close to touching the rousing success of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. There is no question Snyder is a quality filmmaker whose heart was in the right place, but his latest film is an unacceptable Hollywood Blockbuster that deserves to be discarded and burned for all of eternity.
