"Mortal Kombat": A Video Game Adaptation Finally Done Right

"Mortal Kombat": Movie Review

Written By Alex Greenbaum

As a long-time video game fan, the "Mortal Kombat" franchise (since its release in 1992) has been a cornerstone for what is now the biggest form of entertainment in the world (video games). What's even more staggering is the film industry's inability to produce a quality video game adaptation that does its original source material justice. However, the new "Mortal Kombat" film has finally broken the long streak of mediocrity.  Not close to being a perfect film, but long-time supporters of the series and gamers alike can finally rejoice.

The storyline revolves around a washed-up MMA fighter who joins a powerful team to fight against the evil lurking in the Outworld.

Gloriously cheesy and embracing its quirky material, "Mortal Kombat" delivers in many ways. There's enough violence and gore to please fans but it's the impeccable casting that stands out. Kabal (Daniel Nelson), Kano (Josh Lawson), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin) are a few notable standouts, although the entire cast nails each of their characters with precision.  Even though the main character in Cole Young (Lewis Tan) lacks dramatically, his presence gives great context to each iconic fighter and their often hilariously over-the-top antics.

The special effects work flawlessly here as well, with characters like Goro and Mileena that capture the essence of their horrific appearance. Also included is a great musical score by Benjamin Wallfisch ("The Invisible Man", "It Chapter Two") that generates pure nostalgia but also utilizes a modern sound to great effect. Each department involved in creating this film deserves high accolades for staying true to what enthusiasts have been asking for a long, long time.

Director Simon McQuoid's first feature film is an impressive one. For audience members who are going in without much knowledge of the characters and storylines, you might leave confused and let down by its mediocre screenplay. But for those who have been waiting patiently for an effective video game adaptation, look no further and be entertained by the gory beat-em-up we've all been hoping for.
