"Boys State": One Of The Best Documentaries Of The 21st Century

"Boys State": Movie Review

Written By Alex Greenbaum

Political strife aside, "Boys State" is a brilliant documentary, whose in-depth analysis of right and left-wing ideologies bring about these long, yet intellectually stimulating conversations. There's a stunning balancing act within the films defining moments that place it among one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Touching, optimistic, and sadly accurate, "Boys State" is a home run from start to finish.

Over a week period, a thousand teenage boys from Texas attempt to build a government from the ground up. However, the film mainly focuses on four ambitious young men, Ben, Rene, Steven, and Robert.

An alluring and refreshing honesty flows through the veins of the film, representing the reality and truth of modern-day politics. Through the sweat, body odor, and teen immaturity, the bonds formed between these restless individuals is a spectacular examination of the human condition.

What's more, "Boys State" is masterfully directed by Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss, leaving me in awe of its filmmaking techniques. Not only qualifying as one of the best films of 2020 but a real contender for one of the finest documentaries of the 21st Century.
