"The Half Of It": Crumbles Under Its Own Outright Stubbornness

"The Half Of It": Movie Review

Littered with poorly written comedic sequences,  "The Half of It" crumbles under its own outright stubbornness. Its wholly innocent perspective of the world is dramatically engaging, but its climactic conclusion reveals how utterly disjointed the film can be.

Ellie Chu (Leah Lewis) is a dedicated, hardworking student whose writing skills are put to the test when a thickheaded jock (Daniel Diemer) asks for dating advice.

Chu is marked with a charming vulnerability, that director/ writer Alice Wu successfully exposes, without exploiting. Implications aside, the majority of characters besides Chu are stilted, with little to say or do beyond their initial introductions.

Wu's attempt is commendable at best, but her vision is too contrived for frequent involvement.  Incapable of becoming more than the sum of its parts, "The Half of It" falls incredibly short of overcoming its hideous flaws.
