"Premature": One Of The Best Coming Of Age Stories In Decades

"Premature": Movie Review

Delighting and saddening the senses, "Premature" is an uncommon breed. This piece of exceptional cinema delivers the language of love with a real rawness. Romantically engaging, and intensely satisfying, its ambitious passion and sexual chemistry between the two leads is palpable.

A young girl(Zora Howard) finds love with a music producer (Joshua Boone), but things quickly go awry as her expectations eventually meet reality.

The 16mm direction is gorgeous by Rashaad Ernesto Green, with an additionally moving script by Green and Howard manage to jump off the screen with a willingness to shed life's unfortunate truths.  Alarmingly relevant dialogue, even with its conventional moments, hit hard in ways I didn't know was possible. Additionally, the New York setting located more specifically in Harlem is sublime with nuance.

The physicality and beauty of discovering one's body and mind are utilized with such incredible force, the sex, chemistry, and highlighted criticism of modern-day love and culture provide some refreshing authenticity. With a soundtrack that adds a liveliness and charm to its already excellent content, "Premature" is one of the best coming of age stories in decades.
