"Marriage Story": Noah Baumbach's Hardest Hitting Film To Date

"Marriage Story": Movie Review

Director/writer Noah Baumbach ("Squid and the Whale", "Meyerowitz Stories") has delivered his most personal and hardest hitting film to date. The "Marriage Story" is an amalgamation of perspective, divorce, and parental responsibility, that strikes a wonderful balance between its diversified subject matter.

As Charlie (Adam Driver) and Nicole (Scarlet Johansson) sort through their intricate divorce, a plethora of difficulties arise. Their pursuit and persistence of love and companionship is admirable, however their emotional invalidation occasionally grows to high levels of irritation.

Driver and Johansson execute Oscar worthy performances, and provide their two characters with an overwhelming amount of depth. The history between them is tangible, and believable throughout, without any additional contrivances.

"Marriage Story" is draining and tonally at odds with its heartbreaking topic. But two great performances and an intimate script from Baumbach, overcome its internal conflict.
