"The Farewell": A Family Drama, With A Dark And Refreshing Cultural Take

"The Farewell": Movie Review

What an absolute breath of fresh air "The Farewell" is. A gorgeously shot, indie drama, from the folks at A24 productions, have stirred up something special. Besides its worthy examination of human nature, "The Farewell" is a family drama, with a dark and refreshing cultural, take that deserves some serious recognition for its daring achievement.

As a Chinese family discovers that their elderly grandmother has cancer, they decide to leave her uninformed on the matter and schedule a fake wedding to commemorate her life one last time.

Exquisitely told, "The Farewell" can be a downer, but it's brighter moments shine through with a gleeful impact. The performance by Awkwafina is devastating and her brutally honest take on the moral values of cultures is just as eye opening.

Slow at times and even monotonous in its delivery in others, "The Farewell" lacks that giant punch to the gut, and will leave you wanting more by the end. However, its performances and strong message make it a must see film for 2019.
