"The Lion King" (2019): A Dazzling, Eye Popping Remake, That Will Roar It's Way Into Your Nostalgic Heart

"The Lion King" (2019): Movie Review

Jon Favreau's new film, "The Lion King" (not a reboot but a remake) is striking piece of cinema. A dazzling, eye popping remake, that will roar its way into your nostalgic heart. While it's not as sharp as the original, it's a visually exceptional re-imagining for a new generation.

When the death of Simba's father, Mufasa, (James Earl Jones) puts the intimidating Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor) in charge of the land, Simba (Donald Glover) attempts to find his inner courage to stop the menacing beast from taking over his home.

The visuals are something to behold. A truly remarkable feat, and another level of CGI brilliance. It's photo realism brings these beasts alive in a way not seen on film before, even when the dialogue doesn't flow seamlessly.

And the story here is as meaningful as it was in 94. It's sweeping themes about courage, and family is incredibly special. And that's partially thanks to another booming performance by the great James Earl Jones, who's presence is delightful. Others such as Donald Glover or Beyonce lack that emotional intrigue Jones conveys. However, performances such as Seth Rogen's humorous Pumbaa or Ejiofor's terrifying Scar are outstanding.

The films scene to scene flow however is oddly distracting. Similar to the voice acting, there's a incoherency, and some bizarre setups that more feel like cutting corners, rather then fleshing out it's familiar characters.

Overall, this new remake is a real love letter to the old time Disney fans. It holds its cards close to its heart and never lets go, but that's part of the charm of the film. Besides its few lingering problems, this visual treat is sure to delight.
