"Pokémon Detective Pikachu": Fails To Deliver What Makes Pokémon A Worldwide Phenomenon"

"Pokémon Detective Pikachu": Movie Review

The newest Cash grab of the year, "Pokémon Detective Pikachu", fails to deliver what makes Pokémon a worldwide phenomenon. It's fun visual style, doesn't make up for it's lazy script, predictable story line, and lack of a consistent tone.

A Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) teams up with an ex Pokémon collector, Tim (Justice Smith), to solve a mystery surrounding the death of Tim's distant father.

It's script while inherently lazy, does have solid moments, particularly with the chemistry between Reynolds and Smith. However, some quick witted dialogue, and punchy subject matter, usually quickly dissolves into the mundane.

"Pokémon Detective Pikachu" has a real problem on solving (pun intended) the cross roads between adult and juvenile humor, and rarely strikes a perfect tone between the two. This results in a film that struggles mightily to keep adults laughing and children interested.

Finally, the CGI ranges wildly from great to poor. It's main star in Pikachu looks surreal, but it's counterparts look strangely poor at times, especially the second half, when things go off the rails completely.

"Pokémon Detective Pikachu" can be a joy to watch. But the final product lacks a pristine polish to scratch my nostalgic itch.
