"High Life": Movie Review
Claire Denis's new 2018 film, "High Life", is a miserable expedition into space. A joyless experiment of epic proportions, with some truly poor performances to boot.Living in the complete isolation of outerspace, Monte (Robert Pattinson) a man with very few words, finds himself living with his infant daughter, trying to surivive.
It's strongest suit is it's gorgeous, vibrant film making. It's a stunning visuals are just beautifully done, and the ships corridors and sets are engaging as any movie this year.
However, "High Life" is an unnecessary, wondering tale, about nothing. It's pretentious motivations are meandering at best. Whats worst is the acting, which includes a very good Robert Pattinson, and an awful performance by Juliette Binoche, who's intentions are so confusing and uninteresting. The minor characters throughout are also almost all sexually exploited, and its neither sexy nor engaging.
It's a shock value ride, with graphic violence and overly sexual material never finding any true balance between the two.
"High Life" is the first real first big disappointment of 2019.
