"The Ballad of Buster Scruggs": A Goofy, and Somber Ride Into The West

"The Ballad of Buster Scruggs": Movie Review

The Netflix original film, "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs", (directed by the unusual Coen Brothers) is an uneven, but hugely entertaining ride into the Wild West.

Split through six different Old West stories, the anthology dives into lessons of morality with the usual Coen Brothers charm. Some of the stories are sad, others are optimistic, but none of them are uninteresting. They all deliver a shot to the heart.

All six stories are beautifully displayed. The epic shootouts, dusty environments, and vibrancy of each scene is a pleasure to watch. The performances from James Franco as a bank robber, to Liam Neeson as a lost soul and the underrated Tim Blake Nelson as a singing, goofy cowboy are all extremely enjoyable.

But the film is unfortunately uneven at times. Some of the stories don't pack the punch of others, and creates a monotony, especially towards the end.  That Coen Brothers off the wall style can sometimes ruin a perfectly fluid scene with some awkward dialogue choices.

But in the end "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" is a highly enjoyable, slow burn, that sometimes is too metaphorical for its own good.
