"First Reformed": A Preachy Yet Fascinating Philosophical Character Study

"First Reformed": Movie Review

Director/ writer Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull) is brilliant at contexualizing characters who desire a greater meaning in their life.

"First Reformed" is a sometimes preachy yet fascinating character study of a priest (Ethan Hawke) who is dealing with past tragedy and future concequence.

It's a film that challenges, yet preaches ideologies without much room for other perspectives. But the perspective they preach is often exhilerating and creative enough to warrant a viewing more then once.

While it's ending is abrupt and comical, and the film is way too preachy, "First Reformed" is acted well, and includes a timely subject matter, worth talking about long after the credits roll.
