Upgrade: Movie Review
Horror, sci-fi, romance, thriller, and even comedy, "Upgrade" checks off almost every box. A tremendous, B-movie experience, worthy of going down as an instant classic, and avoiding the obnoxiously, spoiler friendly plot driven trailers will make the experience that much more of a gut punch.
The only plot device that is worthy of even offering a mention (without any hint of a spoiler) is that it is set in the future and revolves around how technology can go terribly wrong, somewhat like the tv show "Black Mirror".
Director Leigh Whannell who directed the tedious "Insidious: Chapter 3", has found his calling. A 95 minute, low budget, action packed, story driven, exercise in violence and gore. It's a feast for the eyes, and an adrenaline pump for the soul.
The acting is excellent as well, specifically the main character Logan Marshall-Green who plays Grey. He's a man not meant for the future, but rather the past. He's complex, contradicting, and willingly exposed to the world around him.
It's shallow in some of its story driven plot points, but "Upgrade" is the movie of the summer. Stunning choreography, along with an almost irresistable cast, toppled with extreme violence, "Upgrade" is undeniabely the achivement of the year.
