Top 10 Films of 2017

Top 10 Films of 2017: From "Get Out" to "Call Me By Your Name"

10. "Get Out"

"Get Out" is not the horror masterpiece everyone says it is, but it's a dazzling experience, predicated on racial tension and the liberal elite. Sometimes hitting close to home, "Get Out" is a film that will be talked about for years to come. It's a must see for anyone looking for a fresh take on the horror genre.

 9. "Logan"

"Logan" has no business being as good as it is. Beautifully filmed, meaningful, and violent as hell, it's one of (if not) the greatest superhero movie ever made. Top that with some of the best acting this year, it's a must watch.

8. Detroit

A numbing experience, built upon the events that took place during the Detroit riots in the 1960's, "Detroit" is imperfectly relevant and devastatingly real in it's approach to race relations. It's far from a perfect film, but also an important viewing for anyone wanting to learn about the ugly history of America.

7. "Mother!"

Jennifer Lawrence displays her best work yet, and director Darren Aronofsky impresses with exuberant creativity. Thoughtfully realized and masterfully constructed, the film is a treat from start to finish.

                    6. "Phantom Thread"

Methodical in its approach to love and relationships, "Phantom Thread" is a brilliant showcase of acting and cinematography. Daniel Day-Lewis is great, but its newcomer Vicky Krieps that exhibits some of the most unforgettable acting of the year. From the lavish photography to offbeat storyline, "Phantom Thread" will stick with you long after the credits roll.

               5. "Call Me By Your Name"

No matter what sexual orientation you bestow, "Call Me By Your Name" is a meaningful and often heartbreaking look at love lost. Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer are great, and the brilliant direction by Luca Guadagnino (filmed in the culturally rich Northern Italy) makes the film a winner.

                     4. "Molly's Game"

Based on the true story of Molly Bloom's underground poker games, Director/ writer Aaron Sorkin brings the subject of poker to life. It's rich in substance, and Jessica Chastain's performance is on another level. "Molly's Game" is a quick witted, intelligent drama worth multiple viewings.

     3. "The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)"

Heartbreakingly funny, and meaningful in almost every scene, "The Meyerowitz Stories" is the most underrated film of the year. Brilliant performances by Hoffman and Sandler, and taught direction by Noah Baumbach, this story about family dysfunction is all too relatable.

           2. "The Killing of a Sacred Deer"

Tour de force performances, and a storyline that will shock and awe, "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" is a terrifying thriller. A look into death, adolescence and marriage, the film is keen on challenging the audience. It's a true classic.

        1. "War for the Planet of the Apes"

Possibly the greatest trilogy ever to put on screen, "War for the Planet of the Apes" is an instant classic. The action set pieces are awe inspiring, and the acting by Andy Serkis is something to study in acting classes for years to come. It's not only by far the best movie in 2017, but one of the best movies I've seen in the past decade.
