Downsizing: One Of The Worst Movies Of 2017

Downsizing: Movie Review

Director Alexander Payne (Sideways, The Descendants, Nebraska) has an excellent and often underrated track record. But "Downsizing" will be looked back as his one and only mistake. An unfunny bore, made up upon offensive and repeatedly demeaning stereotypes. "Downsizing" is one of the worst movies of 2017.

Living in a world, where individuals can shrink themselves (downsize) for a financial benefit, sounds like a great idea on paper. But Payne wasn't the individual to direct such an ambitious film, and its oblivious apparency is ultimately just another distraction.

Matt Damon, who plays the over eager and familiar Paul, seems completely miscast. His character barely speaks a line worth remembering, and his actions are moot. But Ngoc (Hong Chau) who is one of the most annoying characters put on screen this year, I found excruciatingly offensive. Her overplayed, Vietnamese accent, and intellectual capabilities don't match a character supposedly in poverty.

The film is misdirected, poorly written and a total misfire. It's intentions are harmless, and Christopher waltz is it's eventual saving grace. But "Downsizing" is a film worth staying away from, it's that bad.
