Mother! Movie Review
Where to even begin? "Mother!" is an extraordinary piece of filming, worthy of Stanley Kubrick. A bat-shit piece of cinema, about the transcendence of madness, and the humanity of civilization. The performance by Jennifer Lawrence is downright perfect, portraying horrific emotion with an awkward pleasantness, you won't believe your eyes.
"Mother!" at face value is about a seemingly normal couples relationship that is put to the test when two uninvited guests show up. While that does resemble the basic plot of the film, there is so much more to the complex universe director Darren Aronofsky has created.
Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, and Michelle Pfeiffer are splendid. Watching these three actors on screen is pure pleasure, and worthy of joining some of their most memorable performances. But it's Jennifer Lawrence who is just outright ridiculous in her role. Aronofsky is a master of the camera, giving Lawrence no time to breath and little time to react. It gives her performance a raw realism to the madness that surrounds her, it's just astonishing.
Besides the brilliant performances, the filming, and sound is just breathtaking. From the creaking, subtle sounds of Lawrence and Bardem's old home, to the loud bangs and screeches of furniture that seems to be flooding the house (seeing it with the best sound possible is a must).
The first half of "Mother!" is a slow, almost methodical, metaphorical analysis into the presence of birth and holiness. While on the other hand, the second half of the film is pure terror and evil. Throughout, your ideas will be challenged as the film unravels itself into craziness. The last thirty minutes or so are unbelievable and left me shaken in my seat. It's nothing like you have ever seen, and will be talked about for years to come.
Darren Aronofsky has out did himself. It's a bit too vague and pretentious at times, but it never failed to keep me emotionally involved into these characters and the story being told. From the pitch perfect performances, to the hauntingly chilling sound/editing, and the masterful second half, "Mother!" is a classic piece of cinema; and audiences will decipher it's meaning and talk about it's philosophical interpretations for decades to come. Bravo!
