Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets: Eye Popping Visual Effects Can't Carry An OverBloated Mess
French director Luc Besson obviously put care into "Valerian", as it's a complete stunner visually. But the characters, dialogue, and story are all a hot mess.
"Valerian" is a sci fi adventure film taking place in the way future where a vast variety of creatures and humans live in a seemingly harmonious environment. But a threat looms on the horizon, and an evil plan to wipe out the rest of a specific species, creates a "who done it?" thriller (even though you know who it is fifteen minutes into the film).
It's hard not to admire the eye popping, gorgeous visual treat Besson delivers here. Especially with the 3D glasses, it delivers a pleasant LSD trip through the different planets. If only Besson focused as much as he did on the visuals, as the story itself, we might have had a real winner.
Unfortunately, "Valerian" is a laughable attempt at creating a quality science fiction film. Dane DeHaan (the new Keanu Reeve) mumbles his way through and his lover/ partner Cara Delevigne can't deliver a line to save her life.
Extremely disjointed, horribly written, and maintaining unbelievably bad acting throughout, I would recommend staying away. Unless you'd like to put a pair of ear plugs in and watch the gorgeous visuals, be my guest.
