Baby Driver Movie Review

Baby Driver: A Thinly Written, But Difficult To Dislike Action, Musical Drama

Edgar Wright has mastered the art of film making. Ever since his cult classic "Shaun of the Dead" in 2004, he has quietly taken cinema by storm. While his new film "Baby Driver" is a powerhouse of creativity, it somewhat lacks what has made his previous films classics in their own right.

Ansel Elgort stars as a getaway drive, who eventually finds himself in a heist gone wrong. Also starring Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey, and Jon Hamm, that all contribute their own type of interesting characters to screen. While the action scenes are brilliant (mostly practical effects, no CGI here), it's the music that is the big takeaway here.

"Baby Driver" is an electrifying musical, action, drama when the beats drop. It's commendable how Wright (even down to the firing of bullets) edits the music to fit the action scenes to a tee. Watching "Baby Driver" flow with creative juices, is refreshing to experience. But besides it's charismatic cast, unique soundtrack, and surprisingly emotional scenes, "Baby Driver" is a thinly written story.

It's disappointing as Wright's script lacks any form of character development. While there are a few excellent scenes with the main characters mother, I never felt emotionally attached to the characters portrayed on screen. This was a huge missed opportunity with Wright, who seemed like he got lost in creating a musical and forgot the characters all together. I truly wanted to try to get invested into Wright's amazing universe he created, but it was supremely difficult to do.

Oddly enough, even though "Baby Driver" has paper thin characters and a script that lacks any depth, it achieves what it set out to do. Creating a musical, bank heist film is a daring premise and I can't fault Wright on at least trying to achieve what is one of the most creative films I've ever seen. I can't say I loved watching it, but the admiration I had experiencing it, warrants enough of a recommendation to say, go see it.
