Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Movie Review

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: An Action Packed, Popcorn Blockbuster

It's hard not to admire how Marvel really took a chance with "Guardians of the Galaxy" back in 2014. From it's tongue and cheek dialogue to it's colorful cast of characters, Guardians is everything a summer blockbuster should model itself after. But now we have Vol. 2, which is equally as fun as the first but missteps a lot more frequently.

The plot takes place as the cocky Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) fights his way through the vast Universe trying to understand his upbringing a bit more clearly. The story in this version stumbles its way through too often, and finds itself developing characters that don't need to be developed. We had an origin movie already, and director James Gunn feels the need to constantly remind the audience that we have to care for the characters on screen. For movies like the dark and serious "Logan" or the character driven "Avengers" the characters need to be fleshed out for audiences to care. But for a campy and lighthearted space opera, it's hard to understand what Gunn was thinking.

But, what Guardians did so well back in 2014, has been achieved once again, with eye popping visuals, comedic dialogue, and a wonderful cast to boot. Chris Pratt (who was born to play this role) is electric and so is the dark and mysterious Zoe Saldana as Gamora, and the obnoxiously hilarious Bradley Cooper as Rocket. However, it's Drax, played wonderfully by Dave Bautista, and the always welcoming Kurt Russell that are the scene stealers.

My obvious expectations were a bit let down, due to an overstuffed plot and unnecessary character development, but it's hard not to admire it's pure bliss. The action scenes are louder and bigger, the cast is having a lot of fun and the script is smart and clever, but the quieter moments left me feeling empty handed. I thoroughly enjoyed my time and would recommend it to anyone who was a fan of the first, but don't go in expecting it's going to surprise you like the original did.
