LOGAN: Claws it's Way Out of Wolverine Formula
You can't get much better than what Logan offers. An action blood fest with enough substance that generates pure emotion towards these characters. Since 2000, we have been seeing Hugh Jackman's Wolverine on screen. There has been some let downs through the seventeen years, but "Logan" takes everything you think you know about the character and flips it on it's head.
"Logan" takes place in the future (2029 specifically) where the Wolverine is a misguided man, with troubles of his own. Taking care of the sickly Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and the albino Caliban (Stephen Merchant). Too add more to Logan's plate, he ends up babysitting a young girl who looks to be a mutant, hiding from deadly forces.
The acting is superb here but specifically Stewart who wields damaging powers, gives an achingly powerful performance. The relationships that take place throughout the movie are heartwarming but also tense, as almost every scene, evil lurks around the corner. From an absolutely devastating incident in a families home to the over-crowded Casinos where Professor X loses control, you almost never get a time to breath.
This is not the "Logan" I expected as it definitely takes its time with characters. The first twenty minutes contain maybe a bit too much exposition (specifically for people who haven't seen the other films) but it was just a minor annoyance in a film that is constantly keeping you on your toes.
Beware, this is not for children, as this is by far one of the bloodiest Marvel movies ever made. Heads are cut off, people constantly die graphically on screen without any hesitation. James Mangold who directed the previous Wolverine movie, directs with such confidence and grace, I get the impression that he wanted every scene to be perfection. And it shows as we get hot, dirty deserts from winding forests, every scene is constantly surprising.
Polished, well edited and sleek as hell "Logan" is everything any fan wanted for the final goodbye to our anger induced hero. It goes from breathtaking action scenes to resonating dialogue with such precision, that gives "Logan" a beautiful finale and a long awaited goodbye, to one of the longest running characters put on screen.
