KONG: SKULL ISLAND: AN ABSOLUTE THRILL RIDE
Forget the awkward A- list celebrities and cheesy dialogue, "Kong: Skull Island" is some of the most fun I've had at the movies in a while. Sure, it's the kind of movie you will forget in a week or two, but while the monstrous action is occurring on screen, its hard to look away.
The simplistic plot of a group of scientists and Vietnam soldiers who explore an uncharted island and find Kong, is as basic as your going to get. But even though each note in the movie is very cliche, the different variations of creatures on the island, from giant spiders to algae covered buffalo, keeps it engaging to watch.
But of course there is a ton, and I mean a ton of bad direction here. From Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson who both look lost in their roles, to John Goodman who is a waste of his acting caliber, the direction by Jordan Vogt-Roberts is poor here. Even the editing in spots feels forced and odd in ways, which makes the dialogue even worst. But that isn't to say some of the actors find their way through as the always good (and evil) Samuel L Jackson plays a soldier looking for vengeance against Kong.
However the real spotlight here in the acting category is John C Reilly, who is an absolute scene stealer, that creates a warranted campiness throughout the movie. And an oddly sweet scene towards the end that almost seemed a bit out of place.
This is not the type of movie that people go to see because of story or acting, but for the absolute mind numbing action. And it delivers in every way possible as Kong fights giant octopuses to giant "skull crawlers" it's more fun than I could have imagined. And this is where the movie delivers on it's promise, it's constant action. It doesn't take long until you see the over one hundred foot ape, which is refreshing since "Godzilla" back in 2014 constantly teased the giant dinosaur throughout the film.
Your not going to get moving or even good dialogue and its not a very well put together movie, but the amount of fun I had seeing it on the big screen is numerous. It's the kind of movie that you don't want to think too hard about and just lay back with your popcorn and soda and just enjoy the ride. I'm bound to forget it in a week, but this eye popping thrill ride made me more excited for "Kong vs Godzilla". It couldn't come soon enough.
