A Cure For Wellness:First half can't save what is a jumbling mess of a second half
Director Gore Verbinski has a great visual style, that obviously doesn't resonate with most mainstream audiences. From "The Lone Ranger" to "Rango" his films are not all that well received from most people critically. But I find his movies intriguing visually while the script might lack in some places, I still can't find myself to look away. And that pretty much describes "A Cure For Wellness" a visually marvel film to look at, but it seems as if they were plodding along as they were filming each scene.
The film starts with a young business executive who is sent off to obtain and return the CEO of his company from a so called "wellness center". At first glance it looks like an upper class old age home, but as the movie unravels so does the dark and mysterious castle that his CEO is resting at.
"A Cure for Wellness" starts off with a bang. Not only is it amazing too look at, but the camera angles and certain shots Verbinski portrayed on screen are almost surreal. From the narrow corridors to the burning sense that something isn't quite right, is exhilarating. But than it falls so flat and contrived in the second half that it's hard to praise what becomes a jumbled mess.
It slowly unfolds itself into having themes such as torture porn, incest, and an almost unbearable dread. For 146 minutes of its run time I can't say that it ever felt like a chore to watch, as I was always entertained by its twist and turns, but it's almost cringe inducing of how contrived the movie becomes. As the film continues,
so does the unbelievability and that's a shame considering how well the movie looks.
