ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS MESS
Gareth Edwards who previously directed the meandering "Monsters" and the horribly dull "Godzilla", has created what I thought was merely impossible: a dull Star Wars movie. The Star Wars spin off (a prequel to the old films) starts off really well with an surprisingly adult scene that seemed like a good place for the movie to lift off. But instead, everything after the first ten minutes falls extremely flat.
The story takes place as the Rebels decide that the plans for the Death Star need to be stolen for their advantage. As the story progresses we meet new characters along the way, which is one of the movies worst weaknesses. There absolutely no characters that are exactly relatable or even interesting. By far the best was Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) and their father daughter relationship that at least had development. But even worst than that these are good actors at work such as Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrera who is a wannabe Darth Vader and a Riz Ahmed, who was previously in the excellent Nightcrawler, as the Imperial pilot, which we get no such reasoning of why he decided to join the Rebel alliance.
What's even worst is that a lot of the action scenes (in IMAX) were extremely dull and been there done that action scenes. But the last fifteen minutes picks up the slack a little bit and brings everything the movie has in the special effects department to the front. But it was too little to late for a film that wanted to be story driven.
It wasn't an awful movie but for a Star Wars film it was extremely dull. Sure some of the action scenes were fun and the K-2SO played by Alan Tudyk was a bright spot of the film but as I was watching I realized I didn't understand anyone's motives. And the weirdly distracting CGI of Governor Tarkin just seemed gimmicky and silly, creating a nostalgia that a lot of people going to see Star Wars won't even care about. It's just a shame that the film so centered on fan service and nostalgia that it forgot about characters.
